P5(d) Linking Audio to Visuals and Applying Audio Effects

P5(d) Linking Audio to Visuals and Applying Audio Effects

Meaning: The meaning of Linking audios to visuals and applying audio effects is putting an audio/ music to the video and combine them together. Applying audio effects mean for example enhancing volume or minimising volume of the music, or even adding extra sounds to it to make it special.

The music for my project is called LUSH LIFE from Zara Larsson, it is a very popular track nowadays which is sang by a famous singer. I downloaded this song from the internet. I have chosen this song because it is very popular, which can catch more people's attention, also it matches my project really well, it has LUSH in the song.

Originally, the song was very long, it was about 3 minutes long, but as my video is an advert, it couldn't be too long or it will cost a lot in real life advertisement on TV.

So, I chose the parts I like and combine them together by cutting and editing them, turns it from 3 minutes to 1 minute, which is enough to advertise the idea of the brand, and also is okay for the length of an advertisement, which will not bored the audiences.
For this length of advertisement, the audience will also easily know that this is an advert.

Sometimes, some parts requires higher volume or lower volume, I can do this by going to "Window" > "Audio Mixer". This is very important, so I could adjust the volume in some particular parts, this could makes the audience could feel the beats and rhythm more when it gets to the middle, or sometimes when the lyrics fit the scenes very much this could also increase their favour to the advertisement.

This will then come up and I can change the volume simply by moving the button up and down on the Master row.

As my advertisement is presented as a music video, therefore some lip-syncing is required in it.

At first, I take videos or film the model dancing with the music at the back, so that it is easier to match the song when I edit it. I also based on the lyrics of the song to decide the acts of the model, so it could be clearer when I organised it.

However, I find it really hard to fit the clips in. First, it is because the materials that I filmed weren't enough, and also sometimes the model lip-sync the song in a different speed, makes the editing extra difficult for me.

So, I either match the clips and songs without matching the lip-sync, but matching the acts and moves of the model to the music.

Here is an example of matching the video with the music. There is a small part of clapping in the music, I asked my model to clap in different pose, then I combine them by matching their clapping, and shorten the length of the video, until the music and the video match completely.

P5(c) Applying Visual Effects and Transitions

P5(c) Applying Visual Effects and Transitions

Meaning: The meaning of applying visual effects and transitions is how effects are created and added to the video, also the effect to the audiences.

Purpose: The purpose of this section is to show how effects are added, why and what do I want to audience to feel base on these effects.

The most effects I have applied to this video, is the Video Transition, which is an effect that connects two videos one right after the other, as  natural as possible. An example is shown on the photo above.

To do so, first I go to "Window" > "Effects"

Then, I will be able to see "Video Transitions".

Then simply click "Dissolve" and choose "Cross Dissolve".

Then, from the left screen, we can adjust the time, the place where you would like the effect to apply between the videos. It gives a very impressive effect.

This effect could not only combine videos, but also connect them better, so it looks more effective.

I would like my music video background based on pink, so I created a pink using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.

First, I go to the Project Log, and I double click. Go to " New Item" > " Color Matte".

Then, with all the settings above, press OK.

Then we could choose a colour for the background, obviously, I have chosen pink.

Then, I have to name my new matte, so it is more convenience for me to edit the video as I could simply recognize it by the name, I named it " Pink bg", meaning Pink Background.

I also did the same thing to create background of other colours, such as light blue and light purple, I named them "blue bg" & "purple bg", because I realise it's too dull to have pink background only even I added effects to it, so I  decided to make more backgrounds, base on youthful colours, because light blue and purple also represent fresh and youth, it also gives different feelings to the audiences, because some audiences might dislike pink this colour personally, it is also a way to attract people's attention as it catches their eyeball.

So, after naming the background, I could just easily drag it to the Video log, to add background to the clips, making it nicer, and to achieve my aim from the beginning. I have chosen pink because this advert is meant to be quite girly, and it is also the colour of young girls, which also compromise with my target audience, teenage girls or young women.

I wanted to try something special, so in the video I combined the videos into one video.

First, I film 2 -3 videos of the model doing the same move.

I just have to drag one of the video to Video 7 and the other one to Video 8 on the same place, so that they can move at the same time. I just have to add a pink background on Video 1, because the bigger the number of the video, the layer will be more visible on the screen, so I will put the background on video 1.

In the middle of the video, I have a small section to show the product and the effect of the bath bomb produce when it is dissolving into the water. This is to show the audiences how amazing these products are and also informing the name of these products so they could find it easy to purchase them.

The video originally was quite quick, so I changed the speed of the clips, so that the audiences could observe the effect slowly and makes it more effective.

First I clicked on the clip, left click it, this will show up once I have done it. We can see there are a lot of options. Then we simply click on "Speed/Duration" to change the speed or the duration of a clip.

Then we will be able to see this, the larger the number of the percentage of the speed, the longer or slower the clip will be. In the other way, the small the number of the percentage of the speed, the shorter or faster the clip will be. Our purpose is to slower the clip for audiences to observe, therefore we have to change the original speed from 100% to 120%, so the clip is slower and it is but  not too slow, so it would be suitable for everyone to watch it in detail and slowly.

In able to do more interesting things as the background, I wanted to use some photos to do a kalida. Adobe preiere pro CS5 is not able to do so, but I could use Adobe After Effects CS5 to do it as it has more effects to play with.

First, I need to import a photo in order to make a kalida. I go to "Import" > "File" then choose the photo I want to work with.

After importing the photo, I can drag the photo directly to the effect log, and start editing it.

Go to "Effect"> "Stylize" > "CC Kaleida".

Go to "Rotation" then rotate the stick for a time.

This is how it looks after the rotation, it also moves in different way and different pattern.

I can also record the length of the kalida rotation.

After finish the kalida, I can go to "Composition" > "Add to render queue".

After putting it to the render queue, I have to change the setting.

Then set it from RGB to RGB+Alpha. The aim of this setting is to match the video's setting, so it is clear and matches the screen.
Then I have to rename this effect, because it is easier for me to edit.

This is how it looks like after applying the kalida in the video, it looks much more colorful and energetic, also it rotates with the video, therefore making the video more interesting and fun.

From the screenshot above, we can see this is a kalida as well, I used the same way, but just changing a colour of it, so it is more colourful, and attracts more attention from the audiences. The good thing about kalida is it changes its shape and it moves as the video goes through, so making the video more interesting and it is fun to see as the model is dancing, the kalida rotates into different shape, making it feels more fun and rhymatic.

P5(b) Producing and Reviewing an Off Line Edit

P5(b) Producing and Reviewing an Off Line Edit

Meaning: Producing and reviewing an off line edit means selections of shots into order and without applying any effects.

Purpose: The purpose of this section is show the audiences how I put my videos in sequence without applying any effects and show changes if any of the clips are different from the storyboard that I have originally planned.

After importing all the videos and renaming all the files, I can start my editing. It is quite easy to edit with this app, I just need to drag videos from the files that I imported to the editing log, as we can see there are loads of Video 1, Video 2, Video 3 etc. It allows me to edit the video with layers so I can add more effects to it to make it more interesting.
Underneath the video, there is a log of audio, which I could put music document or audios for this log, it combines with the video.

This is the viewing log that I am able to see what I have edited. The screen from the left is to view the videos that I imported from the original, they have not been edited. The screen from the right is to view the video that I have edited so far, both screens are very important for the editing process, because we can see the difference between before edit and after edit.

This is how the whole look of the Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 during editing. This photo is captured at the middle of my editing.

Sometimes, we do not follow the original plan, we do make some changes to it.
I am going to show what I have changed in my video from my original plan step by step.

For my original plan, I wanted this scene to be just showing the hands of the bath bombs, water and also the hands of the model. Filming the bath bombs crushing each other as the description showed below. I wanted to do this because I want the scene to follow the lyrics of the song, so I decided to ask the model to crush the bath bombs towards each other, so that the audience could have double sensation of the bath bombs crushing towards each other but also the meaning of the word "crush" literally.

However, I found difficult to film it at that angle, therefore I decided just to film it with the lower body of the model without showing her face, but her hands, bath bombs and half of her body. I think this is easier to film, and it comes out quite nice. So that the audiences could focus on the movement of the model, which I would like them to see, and also there are huge amount of space at the sides so the audiences could also see the bath bomb fizzling behind the model, showing them the effect that the bath bomb creates in the water and persuade them to purchase the product.

Originally, I wanted to film the model brushing the surface of the water with her hands, to create a very beautiful scene, however I did not have enough time for this scene, therefore I didn't film this part. It is because the bath bombs have glitter inside them, so if the model brushes the water with her hand, the water will shimmer and attracts the audience's attention, however it is too hard to control the lighting in the bath room as there are not much light to emphasis the glitter in the water, therefore I have skipped this scene.

I
For the original plan, I wanted the model to smell the bath bomb, also using pink background at the back. I have decided to do so, because I would like to show the audiences that these bath bombs not only create a fabulous effect in the water, but also having a very nice scent, so I would like the model to close her eyes and smell the bath bomb, as if she is enjoying the bath bomb, so the audience will have more interest to purchase the product.

However, I found out that kissing the bath bomb shows more passion of the model towards LUSH, so I decided to change the pose, also I want the video to stick to the LUSH's products so I decided to film some videos of the bath bombs dissolving into the water and use it as a background, so it looks more effective and nice, and also showing the effect of the bath bomb while dissolving into the water, attracting them to purchase the product or interest them.

For this scene, I wanted to film the tap switching on with water falling, and reversed it so make the video more interesting, because water is needed to dissolve the bath bombs, and also water from the tap makes audience relates to shower or bath that we daily have,  however I couldn't find a spot with good lighting and a water tap, so I didn't film this part too.

Originally, this scene is to show the model's hand and throwing the bath bombs into the air, I wanted to do this because this music video is about bath bombs and the theme is young and fresh, therefore I want the model the throw the bath bombs into the air to create a free and young image, however, due to the risk it might occur, that the bath bombs might hit on the model's head, or it might be crushed if the model missed one and it falls on the ground, therefore I decided to delete this scene.

For this scene, I wanted to film the bath bomb fizzling at the side of the water tank, so audiences can observe the bath bombs dissolving into the water. This scene could show not only the effect of the bath bomb in the water, but also the difference of Before & After of the bath bombs, this could amaze the audiences of what the bath bomb could do, however this is too hard, due to the lighting in the studio is hard to control, also it did not look as good as I imagine when I did a close up of the bath bomb, it is very hard to focus on it.

However, I realize that while the bath bomb was dissolving into the water, the water is too saturated that audiences could hardly see the water at the side of the tank, so I decided to film it on the top of the bath bomb, so audiences could see the solid that was releasing from the bath bomb.
